First Images of Melissa Benoist as CBS's Supergirl

I'm not going to lie, I was a little nervous about what CBS would do with Supergirl's infamous costume. But the first pictures are here, and Melissa Benoist's costume looks perfectly reasonable:

We desperately needed more female superheroes on television and in movies, so CBS's Supergirl series was encouraging on its face. But it's a tricky tightrope to walk when adapting female comic book characters, particularly ones like Supergirl, who has been famously sexualized. If they portray her as ultra-sexualized, it would be antifeminist, as male superheroes generally aren't drawn with bare midriffs or legs, but if they changed the costume too drastically, it would draw the ire of comic book fans, and might even imply that a woman can't be strong and sexual at the same time.

This costume actually seems to walk that tightrope quite nicely, as it's still perfectly flattering, just as Superman's costume would be, but isn't sexualized to the point that she seems like a sexual object. I'm sure some fans might be upset about the changes to the costume, as well as the fact that Benoist apparently isn't going blonde for the role, but I'm a happy camper.

CBS's Supergirl also stars Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, and Homeland's David Harewood as Hank Henshaw, as well as former Supergirl Helen Slater and former Superman Dean Cain in unspecified roles. It is slated to air this coming fall.
