Ryan Reynolds Really Wants an R-Rated Deadpool Movie
We Deadpool fans are a hard bunch to please, aren't we? Not satisfied with finally getting a Deadpool movie, it would seem that many will only feel that their demands have been met when said movie receives an R- rating. The star of Fox's upcoming Deadpool movie, Ryan Reynolds, is well aware of the desires of the titular character's fans and today took Twitter to reassure us all that he's pushing hard to give us the movie we really want.

Fans demanding R-rated movies is nothing new, but with Deadpool it's something that strikes right at the very heart of what this character is all about. Back when the Merc with a Mouth first emerged in the 1990's, he wasn't all just wisecracks and light-hearted humor like he is today. Deadpool's early appearances put more emphasis on savage violence than anything else, and while the lunatic wisecracks have always been present, it wasn't until later on that they really became Wade Wilson's signature. Even now that violent streak remains key to the Deadpool character, and that's exactly why fans are so keen to see that reflected in the movie.

Unfortunately though, the needs of a character's fanbase don't always win out against commercial viability. Were Fox to make this an R-rated movie, they would risk dramatically trimming down their audience reach, losing the ability to bring in the precious box office dollars of younger comic book fans. Since its introduction, the PG-13 rating has seen its movies make massive amounts at the box office, thanks in no small part to its ability to attract the family dollar while still containing a satisfactory amount of blockbuster action. In the highly competitive world of comic book movies, Fox faces the tough choice of either giving the core of Deadpool fans what they want, or opting for the relative safety of a PG-13 rating.

Starring Ryan Reynolds, Morena Baccarin and Ed Skrein, the Deadpool movie is scheduled for release on February 12th 2016.
