Watch: Video Essay Highlights Uncanny Similarities Between Marvel's Daredevil and Oldboy
Marvel's Daredevil is becoming one of the most critically acclaimed superhero shows in recent memory, not least as a result of its well-choreographed, technically virtuosic fight scenes. And now, we have one more reason to admire those fight scenes, as this awesome video essay from Cineflect demonstrates that the directors were taking some cues from Park Chan-wook's revenge thriller classic, Oldboy.

The entire essay is worth watching, as it describes the ways in which the "hallway fight scenes" in Daredevil and Oldboy are similar (long takes, green color scheme, contained environment, plucky underdogs), as well as different (the audience's perspective, use of shadows, realism of the fights themselves). But the best part, I have to admit, was definitely the surprise appearance of Chumbawamba. I mean, there's really no context in which that song is not funny, but this usage was particularly great. It almost made me wish that song had actually been part of the score for Oldboy.

Marvel's Daredevil is now streaming on Netflix. Both versions of Oldboy are also, incidentally, on Netflix, although as Cineflect snarks above, only the original is really worth watching.
