Watch the Trailer for Found Footage Horror Film 'Area 51' from the Director of Paranormal Activity
Back in 2008, right after the surprise success of Paranormal Activity, director Oren Peli helmed his only follow-up film, a UFO conspiracy found footage horror film called Area 51. Now, after five years of sitting on the shelf, Area 51 is finally getting a limited theatrical and VOD release. We love an underdog, but if the trailer is any indication, this footage might have been better off lost:

The trailer plays out like hacked-up pieces of The Blair Witch Project and The X-Files (with some creepy dolls thrown in there, for some reason), and much cheesier than the sum of its parts. With the panicked reference to "missing time," lines like "this isn't military technology, it's something else," and the sticky white blood that rises up to attack people, it's like one of the campy episodes of The X-Files if it were actually trying to scare people.

We're still interested in following Peli's career, as Paranormal Activity was inventive in certain ways, and his horror television show, The River, was well-reviewed before it met its untimely demise. We can only hope he's not a one-hit wonder like those Blair Witch Project guys.

Here's the official synopsis for the film: "Witness a new vision of terror from director Oren Peli. Three young conspiracy theorists attempt to uncover the mysteries of Area 51, the government's top secret location rumored to have hosted encounters with alien beings. What they find at this hidden facility exposes horrifying, unimaginable secrets. Now you can experience their harrowing adventure in this footage pieced together from documentation of these chilling events."
