Settle Down: Avatar Composer Claims James Cameron Has Scripts for Four Sequels
Avatar is the highest-grossing film of all time, so it surprised no one when word started going around that there will be a sequel. But then James announced that there would be three sequels, which raised some eyebrows, and now it's come to light that he has actually written scripts for a potential fifth Avatar movie, to which we can only say: "Calm down."

Speaking to Hey U Guys, Avatar composer James Horner claimed that there are currently scripts for four sequels, and Cameron is working to whittle them down to three:

"He's got four sequels script-wise, and he's trying to make it into three. And I think that's where the effort is going right now […] how do you keep it from expanding into a fifth movie?"

We're going to come out and say that there is no need for five Avatar movies (even four is pushing it). The special effects were amazing, but the novelty will have worn off for the sequels, and the story was mediocre at best. I was somewhat impressed that a huge blockbuster would dare to have so much in-your-face anti-American sentiment, but it's really just a Pocahontas rip-off, and the sexism/noble savagery really cancels out any social value it might have had.

The only other advantage Avatar has going for it is the world-building; franchises like Star Wars also have relatively simplistic stories, but fans keep coming back as a result of the well-realized world within the films. But Avatar is no Star Wars, in either film quality or fan base, and even Star Wars was originally only a trilogy.

The first Avatar sequel is set to come out in December 2017, with the other two planned sequels scheduled to be released annually until 2019.
