Kevin Feige: There Are No 'Dark Turns' in the Marvel Cinematic Universe
In the endless nerd rage that is Marvel vs. DC, everyone agrees that, for better and for worse, DC/Warner Bros. tends to distinguish itself by employing "dark" and "gritty" tones in their films, while Marvel tends to keep things light and play up the humor. But even Marvel has gotten a little bit darker of late, and fans of Marvel comics know that several relatively bleak events will likely occur in the upcoming MCU films. In spite of this, however, Kevin Feige insisted in a recent Reddit discussion that Marvel's cinematic universe won't be taking a "dark turn" anytime soon.

There is no dark turn in the MCU. He says every year fans come up to him and ask him if this movie is when the MCU goes "dark" or takes a "dark" turn. He said while the trailers may seem ominous or have a sense of impending doom, the movies do not have that feel, and will not. He said he "Hoped people would catch on by now" - there will be no giant dark turns in the MCU where it then continues to head in that direction. The humor is in the DNA of the movies, there are no plans to change that.

The statement that there "will be no dark turn" in the MCU might be a little misleading, if only because Daredevil is technically a part of the MCU and is most definitely darker and grittier than anything else Marvel has done. However, Feige refers to the movies in his statements, so it's possible that we can assume he's only talking about the films.

In that case, he may just be saying that there will always be humor injected into the proceedings, and that they will never go as fully serious as Warner Bros. and films like Man of Steel or what we've seen of Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. But hopefully he doesn't mean that Marvel is averse to going darker in general, because the events of several upcoming films, particularly the extremely heavy Captain America: Civil War, are going to pretty much demand it.
