Luc Besson to Helm Space Opera Valerian, Starring Dane DeHaan and Cara Delevingne
Luc Besson, the mastermind behind The Fifth Element, Leon the Professional, Nikita, and Taken is returning to his sci-fi roots with Valerian, an adaptation of the French comic series of the same name, a space opera which has been compared to Star Wars and Star Trek. Chronicle and The Amazing Spider-Man 2's Dane DeHaan will star as the titular hero, while Suicide Squad's Cara Delevingne will co-star as his hyperintelligent partner, Laureline.

Here's the official synopsis of the first issue of the comic series:

VALERIAN is a saga that every fan of Star Wars and Star Trek will identify with and love. Valerian and his beautiful, sharp-witted and sharp-tongued partner, Laureline, live adventures set against visually stunning backgrounds: complex architectural inventions, futuristic machines, otherworldly landscapes, and odd-looking aliens that are staples of artist Mezieres's seemingly boundless visual inventiveness. The stories are gripping and of epic proportion, sweeping along in trilling, hyper-space speed.

This is incredibly exciting news; although Besson's last two English Language efforts- The Family and Lucy- were disappointments, especially compared to his classic films, a return to straight sci-fi could be just what the Fifth Element director needs. We're also looking forward to seeing Delevingne in the role of Laureline; she'll be coming off of another kick-ass performance as Enchantress in Suicide Squad, and between Leon and Nikita, Besson has proven himself more than capable of directing strong female characters.

Unfortunately, it looks like we won't see the film for quite a while, if this sweetly earnest Facebook post from Besson is any indication:

Hello everyone – As you probably noticed I’m not really the king of social media, it’s, in fact, my first day on it. Why...

Valerian will start filming later this year and is slated for a summer 2017 release.
