Eight Minutes of Supergirl Footage Has Flight, Heat Vision, and Actual Jokes
Who says DC adaptations can't have jokes? We're not entirely sold on CBS's Supergirl quite yet, but there's enough levity and laughter in these promos that we can safely say it's not a female version of Man of Steel:

The footage certainly isn't perfect, but it's much more promising than I ever hoped it would be. Calista Flockhart is already amazing as Kara's Devil Wears Prada-esque boss Cat Grant, and Melissa Benoist is immensely likable in the role. Some of the lines are clunky and cliched, but it also has flashes of genuine humor here and there. Plus, it seems to have no shortage of action, with Kara's awesome powers allowing her to pull as many physics-defying stunts as a TV budget will allow.

And it remains to be seen whether Supergirl will fall prey to pseudo-feminist "girl power" cliches, especially with the focus on her dating life and the slightly rom-com-ish feel to the whole thing, but several things in the footage make me optimistic. First, we know that it will pass the Bechdel test, as her relationships with her sister and boss seem more central to the proceedings than her relationships with any of the men. And it also seems acutely aware that Kara needs to step out from Superman's shadow, as well as the fact that several aspects of Supergirl's place in popular culture are problematic. The commentary on her infantilized name and her all-too-revealing comics costume were the highlights of the trailers for me.
