John Scalzi Signs Huge Book Deal for More Old Man's War Novels, New Space Opera Series
John Scalzi, celebrated sci-fi author known for acclaimed novels such as Old Man's War and Redshirts, has just signed one of the biggest book deals in the history of genre fiction. Tor Books has signed him for the next 10 years, contracting the author to write 13 novels for a whopping $3.4 million.

"It's an unusually large deal, but it makes tons of sense," said Tor Book srepresentative Patrick Nielsen Hayden. "As far as we can tell, one of the commonest responses to reading a John Scalzi novel is to go out and inhale all the other John Scalzi novels. We see this reflected in his backlist sales, thousands of copies month after month.

One of the biggest challenges faced by science fiction and fantasy storytellers is how to get the reader into a story about an imagined world not our own without resorting to 'let-me-explain-everything' exposition. Scalzi's ability to do this is equaled, in my view, only by J. K. Rowling's."

The deal covers three YA novels, a sequel to his 2014 sci-fi police procedural Lock In, which is set to be adapted into a television pilot, as well as further installments of the Old Man's War series, which has been nominated for multiple Hugo Awards and will be adapted into the Syfy series Ghost Brigades.

Scalzi also won the Hugo Award for Best Novel for 2013's sci-fi adventure Redshirts, which is currently being developed into a television series at FX. He served as a creative consultant for Stargate Universe, and has received acclaim and accolades for his personal blog, Whatever.
