First Trailer for Sci-Fi Horror 'Extinction' Starring Matthew Fox
The first trailer for Extinction, the upcoming sci-fi horror film starring Lost's Matthew Fox, has arrived, and it previews a genuinely scary riff on the zombie apocalypse genre:

The official synopsis for the film reads: "And suddenly, overnight, the world came to a halt. Two men, two survivors, one kid, and hatred that separates them. A place forgotten by everyone, including the creatures that inhabit the Earth... until now."

This is sufficiently vague, but it seems that the movie is about a zombie apocalypse that's a relatively run-of-the-mill zombie virus, until a handful of people take refuge in a nearly unlivable frozen environment. They're convinced that the undead have gone extinct from the cold, but it turns out the zombies have adapted, and become more terrifying in the process.

The trailer is actually pretty tense and unsettling; it seems like the film could be enjoyable if it doesn't veer into cheesy territory. If the movie employs the same Jaws-like tactics of the trailer, and we don't actually see much of the villains, then the atmospheric dread could take this premise to a very scary place. And, if we do see the zombies up close, hopefully they will look more like the mutated humans of The Descent rather than Romero-esque classical zombies.

Extinction is currently in post-production, and is set to be released sometime this year.
