New Concept Art, Photos, and Title Revealed for Independence Day 2
When it was revealed that Roland Emmerich would be joined by the entire cast of Independence Day 2 for an exciting reveal, we speculated that the movie may be upgrading its placeholder title for something a little more...marketable. Well, we were half right, because Emmerich's movie has indeed got a new title but we're not entirely sure it could be labelled an upgrade. During the special livestream event from the movie's New Mexico set, Emmerich and his gang revealed that the sequel to Independence Day would be called Independence Day: Resurgence.

While this title is still a safer bet than other sci-fi movie names - think about the preposterously named Terminator: Genisys for example- it does feel a little unimaginative. Still, we must not judge a movie by its title, and I have to admit that it was pretty exciting to see stars of the original movie, like Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman and Brent Spiner, reunited for a sequel to what my childhood self would describe as a 'classic'.

Away from the title reveal, Emmerich and his team also revealed a few interesting details about the movie and the events contained within it. During the announcement, we learnt that Independence Day: Resurgence would explore a society still dealing with the "War of 1996", with a new Earth Space Defense having been created and headed up by Jeff Goldblum's David Levinson. A new generation of fighters and agents, including Maika Monroe and Liam Hemsworth's characters, help to prep the planet for a new alien invasion. "We call it in the film the War of '96," said Emmerich. "It's like a post-World generation that's unified, and that's amazing to see a world come together with a common enemy. That's a resurgence."

Emmerich also revealed that, at first, he wasn't particularly keen on returning to direct the sequel, but he said that the prospect of working with some new technology was too much to resist. Also, if you thought Dr. Okun was dead, think again, because Brent Spiner revealed his character is alive and just as crazy as before.

Fox has also released the first photo from Resurgence's New Mexico set. The shot below shows one of the many vehicles contained on a new Human base of operations on the moon.
