Tom Holland Is Marvel's Spider-Man
After months of casting rumors, Tom Holland is officially Marvel's new Spider-Man. And, in a more unexpected twist, Jon Watts will direct the first solo film, although he wasn't on any previously reported shortlists.

Marvel and Sony have been looking for a new Peter Parker for months now, with Ender's Game star Asa Butterfield originally rumored for the part. It was most recently reported that Marvel and Sony were in a stand-off over the casting, with Sony backing Holland and Marvel backing Boardwalk Empire's Charlie Plummer, and it seems that Sony won. This isn't too surprising, since Sony is supposed to still have ultimate creative control over the property. Plus, it means that we'll get to see more of Holland pulling these crazy stunts:

Holland is best known for starring in The Impossible alongside Naomi Watts, for which he was nominated for numerous "young actor" and "breakthrough actor" awards. Putting aside my consternation that we will not only be getting a third Spider-Man in ten years, but it's yet another whitebread Peter Parker, Holland seems like a great choice for the role.

Watt's name wasn't on the previously reported director shortlist, which included 50/50 and Warm Bodies director Jonathan Levine, St. Vincent's Ted Melfi, Pitch Perfect's Jason Moore, Napoleon Dynamite's Jared Hess, and John Francis Daley & Jonathan M. Goldstein, the directors and writers of the remake of John Hughes' Vacation. Compared to these other directors, he's a relative unknown, as his major projects include Clown and Cop Car, but he was reportedly "hand-picked" by Kevin Feige.

"As with James Gunn, Joss Whedon, and the Russo brothers, we love finding new and exciting voices to bring these characters to life. We spent a lot of time with Jon and find his take and work inspiring," said Feige.

Holland's Spider-Man will make his first appearance in Captain America: Civil War, with the first solo film set to be released in theaters on July 28, 2017.
