Han Solo is Getting His Own Star Wars Prequel Movie, Coming May 2018
Everybody's favorite scoundrel is getting an origin story. Han Solo, one of the most beloved characters in the entire Star Wars saga will become the subject of a brand new Star Wars: Anthology movie, which will be released in theaters in 2018. Directing the movie will be Phil Lord and Christopher Taylor, the dynamic duo that brought us The Lego Movie, and the 21 Jump Street movies.

Adding even more excitement to the news that Han Solo is getting his own movie is the fact that father/son team Lawrence and Jon Kasdan will be responsible for penning the movie's screenplay. Lawrence Kasdan has strong ties to LucasFilm and the Star Wars saga, helping write the screenplays for no fewer than three Star Wars movies, including Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back and the upcoming Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Kasdan's son, Jon is best known for his work on TV shows like Freaks and Geeks, and Dawson's Creek.

Opening quote
"It's not just any filmmaker who can tell the story of such a beloved icon like Han Solo, and I'm excited to say we've found the perfect team to handle the task. Larry and Jon know all there is to know about the character, and Chris and Phil will bring their wit, style, energy and heart to tell Han's story." - LucasFilm President Kathleen Kennedy
Closing quote

When Marvel's Star Wars comics revealed new details on Solo's past earlier this year, it had many Star Wars fans (us included) thinking that even more light would be shed on the loveable rogue's background in future Star Wars projects. Now, we learn that the history of Han Solo will be documented in the biggest possible way and it opens up a whole new line of questions for fans to mull over.

As is often the case with big franchises, news of a Han Solo prequel has been met with mixed reactions from Star Wars fans. After all, Harrison Ford is the face of this beloved character, just as Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher are the faces of Luke and Leia. With this in mind, it's safe to say that the casting of a young Han Solo will be the one of the biggest decisions Kathleen Kennedy and her LucasFilm have ever faces since the Disney takeover. It's one thing to choose a new generation of Star Wars heroes, but selecting the right actor to play a character who is already a Star Wars legend is quite another.
