Watch the Final Fantastic Four Trailer Unveiled at San Diego Comic Con
Although it was in Hall H on Saturday at SDCC, Fantastic Four was definitely overshadowed by other superhero properties like Deadpool, Batman v Superman, and Suicide Squad. But for all the flack Fantastic Four is getting (and it's a lot), the trailer has plenty of exciting parts, especially Johnny Storm's impressive pyrotechnics and our first full look at Doom:

Josh Trank hasn't been shy about his desire to make a "gritty" origin story for the Fantastic Four, modeled after recent re-imaginings like Batman Begins. I don't object to this on principle, but it's a risky proposition, as the writing and tone have to be just right to make a serious superhero movie work. For every Dark Knight, there's a Man of Steel, in other words, and if the script isn't good, there isn't going to be humor or silliness to pull the audience through. That's not to say it won't be a good movie, it will just hinge on the script so it remains to be seen.

That said, some of the costumes and visual effects look a little too much like a hard sci-fi/traditional superhero movie to have a "grounded" and/or "realistic" feel. Can you imagine seeing this version of The Thing in Batman Begins? Or even this version of Dr. Doom? I love the cast, but some of the footage doesn't bode well.

Fantastic Four comes out in theaters on August 7.
