UPDATED: Arrow Casts Gay Mister Terrific for Season Four
Comedian Echo Kellum has been cast as DC Comics character Mister Terrific on the upcoming fourth season of Arrow. There are several versions of Mister Terrific in the comics, but Kellum will reportedly play Curtis Holt, who is presumably based on Michael Holt, the second character to take up the mantle.

In the comics, Holt has a "natural aptitude for having natural aptitudes," and so he had no trouble collecting 14 PhDs, becoming a self-made millionaire, and winning an Olympic gold medal. He's not described as quite so larger-than-life in the iteration that will appear on the grounded television show, with EW describing him as "a technological savant and inventor," who works under Felicity at Palmer Industries.

The character will also be homosexual, as Greg Berlanti revealed in Arrow's SDCC panel. Neither of the superheroes who took on the Mister Terrific moniker in the comics were gay, but as we say every time this happens, it really shouldn't matter. Or, it should matter, but in a positive way, because creators like Berlanti are working to make the comics community more inclusive and representative.

Kellum is a relatively unknown actor, with his most high-profile roles on the short-lived sitcoms Ben and Kate and Sean Saves the World. This is his first venture into both mainstream drama and the geek world.

Comic Book Resources reports that Arrow has also cast Anarky for season four. The DC Comics villain will be portrayed by Alexander Calvert, best known for his roles on Bates Motel and The Returned.

The official description for the character reads: "Lonnie Machin (AKA Anarky) is a deranged freelancing criminal who is willing to do whatever it takes to impress a potential employer." It was announced at San Diego Comic Con last week that Anarky would be working with the season four Big Bad, Damien Darhk, played by Justified and the MCU's Neal McDonough.

The fourth season of Arrow premieres on October 7 at 8pm on The CW.
