New Supergirl Trailer Tells the Story of the Woman of Steel
Many of us saw the Supergirl pilot at San Diego Comic Con (or, let's be real, when it leaked online a couple of months ago), but for those of you who haven't seen it, CBS has released a new trailer promoting the first female comic book hero on television, entitled "Her Story":

Where the first look at the series focused (perhaps too much) on Kara's personal life, and subsequent teasers overcorrected by almost exclusively focusing on action scenes and Kara's superhuman abilities, this trailer strikes a nicer balance. While it shows Kara learning to fly, and using her super strength and laser vision, it also allows Melissa Benoist's adorable personality to shine through (her effusive happiness at seeing herself on TV was probably my favorite part of the pilot).

That being said, this trailer also demonstrates why female superheroes are tricky right now. Because she's the first one, there's an expectation that she will be representative of all female superheroes (and all women, to some extent), which places a lot of pressure on the character. And they're at least trying to engage with feminism, but they may be going about it the wrong way. The borderline cringeworthy dialogue near the end of the trailer, for example- "Women bow before men on my planet" "We're not on your planet"- is way too ham-fisted to make a real impression. It's more powerful to show that Kara is a powerful, competent person rather than just hitting the audience over the head with it, but we've only seen the pilot, so they're entitled to have a few rough spots.

Supergirl stars Melissa Benoist as Kara Danvers/Supergirl, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Chyler Leigh as Alex Danvers, and David Harewood as Hank Henshaw/Cyborg Superman. It will premiere on CBS on October 26 at 8pm.
