Brian Michael Bendis: Marvel/Netflix Jessica Jones Series Is 'Everything I Could Have Wanted'
After Daredevil, Marvel/Netflix's Jessica Jones has some big shoes to fill, but luckily, it officially has its first ringing endorsement. Brian Michael Bendis, the legendary comic book writer who created the character for the 2001 series Alias, recently revealed his thoughts on the first few episodes on Tumblr, and he had nothing but nice things to say. He positively gushed about the show, calling it "faithful," "lively," and "everything [he] could have wanted."

When asked by a fan whether he'd given input on the series, he said,

Opening quote
I know I've been very low-key on talking about the Jessica Jones TV show but I think I have to stop doing that because I can't hold it any longer. I'm going to burst. The show is so good.

I have seen the first couple of episodes, and because I didn't work on it directly, I can say this with full no-ego fanfare: I loved it!

And believe me, I was going to be the hardest on it. Harder than any of you.

Jessica is a part of my DNA. A bad Jessica Jones show would have hurt me deeply.

He then clarified that he was not working on the show on a regular basis, mostly due to his commitment to the Playstation series, Powers. But he did meet with the writers' room, gave input on the first drafts of the pilot, and ultimately gave them their blessing, stating that he is "very proud to have [his] name on it."

Opening quote
It is faithful and lively and everything that I could personally have wanted from the show. The mean streets of Marvel/Netflix from a different perspective than Matt's but at the same time… it all fits. Just like the comics on their best day. and just like Netflix's Daredevil, the look of the show is cracklin' noir but with its own palette.
Closing quote

He also praised the casting of the show, especially Krysten Ritter, who plays the titular Jones, and Mike Colter, who plays her love interest and fellow Defender, Luke Cage. Ritter is more established, and was brilliant on Breaking Bad in particular, so it comes as no surprise that her interpretation of the dark, sarcastic character is a hit. But fans will be relieved to hear that the lesser-known Colter is "perfect" for the role, with Bendis comparing his casting to Robert Downey Jr.'s as Iron Man:

Opening quote
Krysten Ritter is soooo good. And Michael Colter. Wait until you see Michael Colter. The casting of Luke Cage, in my opinion, and have said this to everyone behind the scenes, is as strong and spot on as the casting of Tony Stark. It's probably the hardest to cast and they got it. Perfect.
Closing quote

This is extremely high praise, and it will remain to be seen if this is an overstatement (although we do love Colter as Lemond Bishop on The Good Wife). But if anyone is to be trusted, it's Bendis, and it sounds like Jessica Jones will more than satisfy even the most die-hard of Marvel fans.

Marvel's Jessica Jones will begin streaming on Netflix sometime this year, while Luke Cage will come out in 2016, followed by Iron Fist and a Defenders miniseries.
