Pacific Rim 2 Gets a Working Title, Will Start Shooting in November
Guillermo del Toro may never make that awesome-sounding Godfather-style Jabba the Hut prequel, but he's still hard at work in the sci-fi/fantasy genre, as he is about to release his fantasy-romance-horror, Crimson Peak, in October, and will begin filming the highly anticipated Pacific Rim sequel just a few weeks later, in early November. The working title is Maelstrom, although it's unknown whether that will actually be the title or whether it's just a code name for the studio.

It was announced last month that Pacific Rim 2 would be released in April 2017, along with an animated series with an undisclosed release date. Del Toro will return to direct and write the script for the film, which he stated will follow many of the same characters from the beloved first film:

"The characters I love will return," said del Toro. "Raleigh, Mako, Newt, Gottlieb and who knows, maybe even Hannibal Chau – but we are taking them into a fresh territory that will display amazing sights and battles. The first film set the stage and now we're ready to have a blast."

The sequel was slow to get developed, probably because it performed poorly at the domestic box office. But it was a surprise smash critical success, and it performed extremely well in international markets. So we can likely expect a lot of pandering to international audiences in the sequel, but at least that means the cast may be more diverse than usual.

The sequel will see the return of stars Charlie Hunnam and Rinko Kikuchi. A plan for a trilogy is in place, but it will depend on the sequel's level of success at the box office.
