Will Suicide Squad Show the Joker's Origin Story?
In The Dark Knight, Heath Ledger's Joker kept his backstory mysterious, leaving fans guessing as to how he became a clown-painted supervillain. But new reports indicate that we might get to see the comic book origins of the Joker play out onscreen in Suicide Squad. Over the weekend, Margot Robbie's stunt double, Ingrid Kleinig, posted a set photo of a steel beam with the name "Ace Chemicals" inscribed on it, implying that the film may depict the Joker's most iconic backstory.

In the DC Comics universe, Ace Chemicals is the chemical plant at which the Joker first fell into that vat of chemicals while wearing the infamous Red Hood, bleaching his skin and turning his hair green. It's also where, in the New 52 version of her origins, Harley Quinn is pushed into the same vat by the Joker, resulting in very similar effects.

It's possible that this will just be an Easter Egg, but other members of the cast and crew have been posting photos of the Richard L. Hearn Generating Station in Toronto, which would definitely make a pretty convincing Ace Chemicals. As a result, many are speculating that this steel beam won't just be lying around in a particular scene as a wink to DC Comics fans, but rather that the location itself will play some role in the movie, possibly in a flashback of the Joker's origins.

But do we really want to see the Joker's origin story in Suicide Squad? In the comics, not even Batman knows who the Joker was before he became the Joker, and part of what makes the Clown Prince of Crime such a complex and interesting character is the fact that we don't know what his life was like before he fell into the vat. It's doubtful that Harley Quinn is going to get pushed into the vat of chemicals herself in the film, as Robbie's version of Harley still has her blonde hair - an attribute that changed in the comics from the moment she came out of the vat. More than likely, Ace will end up being the Joker's hideout or play some other role in the film, as it has in various comics, animated series, and video games.

Suicide Squad premieres on August 5, 2016.
