Ready Player One Author Ernest Cline Signs Seven-Figure Deal for Third Novel
Ernest Cline, author of the wildly popular sci-fi novel Ready Player One and this summer's Armada, just signed a deal with Crown Publishing for his third book, and it's a big one. According to THR, the contract was in the "low-to-mid seven figures."

The plot and title of the book are "top-secret," but it reportedly falls into the sci-fi genre. Surprise, surprise.

Ready Player One follows a boy who is plugged into a utopian virtual reality world and has the opportunity to control the world if he can unlock an Easter egg with 80's pop culture references. It won several awards, was a bestseller, and is currently being adapted into a film by none other than Steven Spielberg.

Armada is not a sequel to Ready Player One, although it is similarly geeky and pop culture reference-heavy, as it follows a gamer who is chosen to fight an alien invasion that mimics the video game he is playing. It debuted at #4 on the NYT Bestseller list this summer, with Universal picking up the movie rights.

Movie rights have not been sold on the third novel yet, but it seems fairly likely that they will by the time it comes out.
