Leonard Nimoy Documentary 'For the Love of Spock' Reaches Kickstarter Goal
Good job, Trekkies! The Leonard Nimoy documentary, "For the Love of Spock," will live long and prosper, now that the project has comfortably exceeded its crowdfunding goal.

For the Love of Spock is a passion project of Adam Nimoy (Leonard's son) that was originally a collaboration with his father, until Leonard's death earlier this year. Adam then continued the project on his own and turned to Kickstarter for funding, and has now raised $662,640 compared to the original $600,000 goal.

Nimoy stated that the success of the campaign means that the film is definitely happening, although he may turn to other funding strategies in order to make the film even better. The visual effects he would like to add, for example, may cost more than the original budget.

Opening quote
"We're trying to reach higher and do a first-class film - $600,000 is not that much money," Nimoy told Space.com. "We're budgeting as tightly as we can and looking for other sources to finance."

In the coming months, Nimoy will attempt to get the rights to more of his father's films, theater performances, and other productions. He will also interview fans at conventions about his beloved father and do as much film production as possible while he's still collecting footage. If all goes according to schedule, the film should be ready to distribute in January.

Nimoy described the project as follows:

Opening quote
This film was originally conceived as a tribute to Mr. Spock to help celebrate the 50th anniversary of the original series. Now, with Dad's passing on February 27th, the film will also explore the incredible career and artistry of Leonard Nimoy. But what has become increasingly apparent as I continue to work on this project is that it's also a personal journey.

Opening quote
Although I had initially intended to take a somewhat detached, objective view of the subject matter, more and more people involved in this film have urged me to interject some of my own perspective on what it was like growing up with Mr. Spock in the house, and how Dad's new-found celebrity and meteoric career affected my life.

For the Love of Spock Documentary Surpasses Kickstarter Goal

The documentary will be narrated by Zachary Quinto, who plays the Spock character in the rebooted Star Trek films. Nimoy and Quinto became friends when Nimoy appeared in a cameo for Star Trek: Into Darkness, and Quinto has been very vocal about his enthusiasm for the project.

Nimoy may hold another crowdfunding campaign in order to supplement the budget, but he also stated that campaigns take time away from actually working on the quality of the film:

Opening quote
"We did raise a lot of money, and that is going to take us a very long way," Nimoy said. "We're going to have a film. We know we can make a film. But we know from "[Star Trek]: Axanar" that the more money they raise, the more we can add to make it a better film."
