Marvel Comics to Introduce New Superhero Red Widow in Mockingbird One-Shot
Female superheroes are woefully underserved, but they're finally starting to gain a little bit more ground, and Marvel (while not perfect) is leading the way. Between Black Widow, Scarlet Witch, Agent Carter, and the upcoming Captain Marvel and Jessica Jones, they are slowly adding more women to their cinematic universe. And today, it was announced that they will be adding another female superhero to their comics universe: the first-ever Red Widow.

Several heroes have taken on the mantle of Black Widow over the years, most famously Natasha Romanoff, portrayed by Scarlett Johansson in the MCU. But this will be an entirely different character, albeit one who is in the same "family." She seems to have a similar origin story to Black Widow, except she willingly chose to undergo the invasive experiments in the Red Room (hence the name, presumably).

The news was revealed by Beautiful Creatures author Margaret Stohl, who will include the character in her in-universe YA novel, Black Widow: Forever Red:

Opening quote
The Red Widow is a powerful new female superhero for the Marvel universe," Stohl told The Mary Sue. "In many ways, she's the opposite of the Black Widow-she actually chooses to become the Red Widow-but both Widows share a mysterious bond and a history, and will change the course of each other's lives, moving forward. And of course, this is just the beginning for this enigmatic and deadly new character. Red Widow's story first emerges within the pages of Mockingbird: S.H.I.E.L.D. 50th Anniversary #1, and will then be featured in my upcoming (prose) novel, Black Widow: Forever Red. I couldn't be prouder of both Widows-and of Marvel Comics, for being so supportive of the two of them.

Mockingbird: S.H.I.E.L.D. #1 will be the first in a series of one-shots celebrating S.H.I.E.L.D.'s 50th anniversary. It will be written by New York Times bestselling author Chelsea Cain in her comics debut, with artwork by Joelle Jones, who has illustrated many titles for Marvel, DC, Vertigo, and Dark Horse, most recently Dark Horse's Lady Killer. The issue, which is described as a "psychological thriller," will follow Bobbi Morse as she exacts revenge for the murder of a loved one.
