Legendary Poster Designer Drew Struzan Says Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the Best Star Wars Yet
Some of you may not know his name, but all of you will be familiar with his work. Drew Struzan is the legendary designer behind some of the Star Wars franchise's most-iconic posters, including the one revealed for Star Wars: The Force Awakens last weekend

Struzan's close ties to the Star Wars franchise mean he is ideally placed to give us some insight into what we can expect from JJ Abrams' movie, and give us insight he has. In a rare moment of openness (Struzan has rarely revealed his thoughts on the Star Wars movies), the designer reveals he has a great deal of hope for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, saying it will probably be the best movie in the series so far. Here's what Struzan said in an interview with Movie Weekly after having seen a cut of of The Force Awakens with JJ Abrams.

Opening quote
I've never worked with J.J before and so we started working on it and he showed me like half the movie and it was just… a wonderful film and I know it's going to be grand. I got to read the script and subsequently I've seen half of it and I can tell you and the fans this, Honest to god, it is far and away probably going to be THE BEST Star Wars you've ever seen.
Closing quote

That's high praise considering how well this man knows Star Wars movies. It's also worth reminding people that, while Struzan has worked closely with George Lucas on all of the previous Star Wars movies, he's not one for dishing out hyperbole. You'll be hard pressed to find the usual stream of praise-laden interviews with a man like Struzan, so when he says he loves something, he's probably telling the truth.

With his new poster revealed, Struzan was also able to reveal a little more on the processes that went into creating the image you see above.

Opening quote
Oh it [seeing a cut of the film] helps undeniably, because it's not about what I feel, it's what they did and it's up to me to get a feeling about the film. Because you know after all, as much as we'd like to think we're intellectuals, we really act more with our hearts than we do with our heads and I definitely have the bigger heart than I have the brain (laughs).

I read the script and I saw the film, I got to know the maker and I know Star Wars. I had feelings for it and I paint how I feel about it. And it seems to connect with you and the world. So I have a universal feeling and I paint what I saw. Having seen the film I know what it is about. I got familiar with the characters, so I know what they're portraying in their feelings. So I paint the situation and I paint the feelings. Not to tell the story, but to tell you how you're going to feel when you see the film.
Closing quote

Struzan has said that he intends to start winding down his work, which after so many years in the biz, is understandable. Luckily for us Star Wars fans though, he admits it would be hard to turn down more work with LucasFilm and the Star Wars franchise. Check out some of his iconic work below.
