ISS Astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti Joins Fanmade Star Trek: Axanar Film
The full-length Star Trek: Axanar film is finally happening after a successful crowdfunding campaign, and now it has a real-life astronaut on board (no pun intended). Samantha Cristoforetti, an ESA astronaut who recently returned from an extended tour on the ISS, has just joined the cast in an as-yet-undisclosed role.

Star Trek: Anaxar is a fan-produced film that began as an acclaimed short released at San Diego Comic Con last year. The film then launched a Kickstarter campaign that raised more than $600,000, and just wrapped an Indiegogo campaign that raised over $487,076, nearly double the original goal of $250,000. The funds are enough to begin production, especially since the four-act feature is going to be split into four episodes, but according to the Indiegogo page, there are still ongoing production costs.

The film follows a documentary-style account of the Battle of Axanar, a conflict between the Federation and the Klingons. It takes place approximately 20 years before the events of the first episode of Star Trek, and tells the story through the eyes of Garth of Izar, a character introduced in the original series episode, "Whom Gods Destroy." Cristoforetti joins a geeky cast that includes Battlestar Galactica alums Richard Hatch and Kate Vernon, as well as Star Trek alums Tony Todd and Gary Graham.

Cristoforetti became the first Italian woman in space when she launched to the ISS in November of 2014. When she returned in June of this year, she had secured the records for longest spaceflight by a woman and longest continuous spaceflight for a European. Most importantly, she was the first person to brew a coffee in space, and is a huge Star Trek fan.

In these pictures, she is brewing the first zero gravity coffee, and wearing a Starfleet uniform. She's perfect for this movie.

Filming for Star Trek: Axanar is set to begin in early 2016.
