Ridley Scott Is Working on Prometheus 2 Right After The Martian
The Alien franchise is alive and well, as the next few years will see the release of both Prometheus 2, helmed by Ridley Scott, and Alien 5, led by Neill Blomkamp. Now, the most recent reports indicate that we'll see Prometheus 2 first, as Scott began working on it right after he was finished with The Martian.

Empire asked Scott how he felt about The Martian's release date being moved up, which was announced approximately two weeks after the film finished shooting. But as it turns out, Scott wasn't too bothered by the change:

Opening quote
"I was already on to my next movie!" said Scott. "I was starting to look for locations for my next movie, which is Prometheus 2."
Closing quote

Looking for locations is fairly preliminary, but The Martian finished filming back in February or March at the latest, so it's likely that a significant amount of pre-production work has been done on Prometheus 2. This would make sense, especially considering that there have been rumors swirling that production will begin in January.

I'm not sure that anyone actually wants a Prometheus sequel, but this is at least interesting because it will directly affect Alien 5. It was recently announced that Neill Blomkamp's sequel was delayed to give room to Prometheus 2, so as not to step on the franchise's toes. This is probably a smart move, since fans are so much more excited about Alien, Prometheus will serve as a hype-builder rather than an anticlimax. From the most recent reports, it looks like Prometheus 2 will be released in 2017, while Alien 5 will enter production later that year and be released in 2018.
