Watch the First Trailer for The 5th Wave Film Adaptation, Starring Chloe Grace Moretz
If we absolutely need to have yet another post-apocalyptic, romance-driven young adult book trilogy adaptation (in which the last book will be split in two films, I'm sure), it might as well star Chloe Grace Moretz. The first trailer for The Fifth Wave is here, and it looks like fairly typical YA fare, but Moretz's presence and a healthy dose of mythology could set it apart from the pack:

The 5th Wave follows a young girl named Cassie, played by Moretz, who is one of the last survivors of a multi-stage alien attack by an entity called "The Others." The first wave knocked out the electricity, the second killed billions with tsunamis, the third wiped out the remainder with an incurable virus that resembles an advanced form of Ebola, and the fourth- gets into spoiler territory. But if the fifth wave is accomplished, humanity will be completely exterminated.

It looks like every other YA adaptation, complete with a love triangle, Maze Runner-esque literal names for things ("the Others"? Really?), and an impressive Ansel Elgort look-alike. But that being said, some of the footage looks compelling, especially the apocalyptic details of planes falling out of the sky and tsumanis tearing down cities. At the very least, it should be entertaining.

The official synopsis for The 5th Wave reads:

Opening quote
In The 5th Wave, set in the present day, four waves of increasingly deadly attacks have left most of Earth decimated. Against a backdrop of fear and distrust, 16-year-old Cassie is on the run, desperately trying to save her younger brother. As she prepares for the inevitable and lethal 5th wave, Cassie meets a young man who may become her final hope.
Closing quote

The 5th Wave hits theaters on January 15, 2016.
