First Clip from Gotham Season Two: Will Barbara Kean Become Harley Quinn?
The first full clip from Gotham's second season has been released, and it shows Jim's newly psychopathic ex-fiancee, Barbara, meeting Jerome in Arkham Asylum, where he gives her some questionable advice:

Watching Barbara's character development last season was like watching a train wreck: you just couldn't look away, no matter how much you wanted to. Her characterization got worse and worse, until finally the writers had painted themselves into a corner and had no choice but to make her a villain. And, as we predicted, Barbara as a full-fledged villain is a huge improvement (although that's not saying much). She's finally entertaining, and even somewhat independent. Yes, she still uses her newfound assertiveness to cajole a big strong man to protect her, but honestly, that's probably the only kind of feminism we can expect from Gotham.

But now that she is clearly supposed to be a villain, who will she be? They're deviating from the comics no matter what, as the DC Comics Barbara Kean is not a superhero or villain, but James Gordon's ex-wife and the mother of Batgirl/Oracle. Since she's a regular character, and they really can't seem to help themselves when it comes to adding iconic Batman villains, it seems pretty likely at this point that she'll be a version of Harley Quinn. In the classic supervillain's pre-New 52 origins, she met the Joker in Arkham Asylum and fell in love with him, and Jerome and Barbara seem to have some chemistry brewing here. In the comics, she was a psychiatrist before meeting the Joker, but it seems close enough. A show that introduces Scarecrow, The Joker, Riddler, Penguin, Two-Face, Catwoman, and about a thousand more in just the first season would never skimp on Harley, and I doubt they would cast another actress when they already have a psychotic blonde headed to Arkham.

Gotham returns for its second season on September 21 on Fox at 8pm.
