Mads Mikkelsen Needs to Play Dormammu in Marvel's Doctor Strange
The news that Mads Mikkelsen is in talks to join Marvel's Doctor Strange as a villain has us super excited for a number of reasons. First of all, Mikkelsen himself is one of the best bad guy actors working today. From his role as Bond villain Le Chifre in Casino Royale to his star-making turn as the titular Hannibal on the acclaimed NBC drama, the guy has the art of portraying cultured, sophisticated evil down to a science. Which is why he needs to play the millennia-old ruler of the Dark Dimension, Dormammu.

Look, we love the film's casting of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Baron Mordo, and we really think he'll be great in the film, but Mordo is a little underwhelming as the film's main villain. Don't get us wrong, he has his place in the film as Strange's nemesis, but at the end of the day, he's just too similar to the film's hero. He essentially has all of the same powers and abilities as Stephen Strange, just on a lower scale. He's not the Sorcerer Supreme, so why should we as the audience worry about him if Doctor Strange isn't? Dormammu, however, is another story...

Dormammu is basically immortal, has been around forever, and yes, he's more powerful than Strange. In fact, he's more powerful than practically anybody in the Marvel Universe, so any time Doctor Strange goes up against him there's always the question of whether or not the hero will prevail. Marvel could use that kind of drama with one of their movie villains (though at least we're pretty certain Strange won't be going up against another angry businessman). Plus, if Mikkelsen is Dormammu, that could open the door for Ejiofor's Mordo to take on kind of a Loki role, where he and Strange could team up against Dormammu, with Mordo's motivations never being fully clear.

Additionally, Mikkelsen could absolutely ham it up as Dormammu. The character is pretty over-the-top, and seeing Mikkelsen really go for it would be an absolute joy. The character would likely be portrayed via motion capture animation, which would be a slight drawback since we wouldn't be able to see Mikkelsen's decidedly evil-looking face (sorry, Mads, but it's true), but the guy is such a gifted actor when it comes to projecting an eerie sense of doom that he's one of the few out there who could give a convincing CGI performance in the role.

Doctor Strange is said to be very dark, and to involve other dimensions. Well, you can't get much darker than the Dark Dimension. If the movie really wants to go for a different tone than the rest of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, then Dormammu has to be in it. He's dark, he's scary, he's trippy... he's everything this movie seems to be striving for, and his inclusion should be a no-brainer.

With all the criticisms being hurled at most Marvel villains for being weaksauce, Dormammu could really make an impact as the most threatening bad guy we've seen in a Marvel movie yet, especially if he's being helmed by baddie-extraordinaire Mikkelsen. So Marvel, do the right thing, and cast Mads Mikkelsen as Dormammu.
