Watch as the Mission to Mars Goes South in the First Clip from The Martian
The Martian is one of the most anticipated movies of the year in any genre, and although we've seen footage from the film in multiple trailers and TV spots, we haven't yet seen an actual clip. Now, Fox has unveiled the first full clip from the film, which wastes no time in getting to the action and showing us how Mark Watney gets stranded on Mars to begin with:

The clip shows us the very beginning of the disaster that leaves Matt Damon's Mark Watney to fend for himself on the toxic Red Planet for several years. After a frightening storm report, the central team of astronauts, which includes Kate Mara, Michael Pena, and Sebastian Stan, scrubs their mission on the orders of the commander (Jessica Chastain). Even just from this brief clip, it seems that the main emotional thrust of the film will lie with Chastain's character's guilt over leaving Watney, as it should be, since Chastain can carry a film like nobody's business (let us all remember Interstellar).

The official synopsis for The Martian reads:

Opening quote
During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring "the Martian" home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney's safe return. Based on a best-selling novel.
Closing quote

The Martian will have its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival on September 11, and will have a wide release in theaters on October 2.
