The Final Two Divergent Movies Get New Titles and Possibly a Different Plot
Divergent was a fun guilty pleasure, and Insurgent was less pleasurable and guiltier, so we aren't eagerly anticipating the final two films, which are based on the third book in the novel trilogy, Allegiant. Originally, the Divergent series was going to follow in the footsteps of Harry Potter, Twilight, The Hunger Games, and probably every other YA franchise that will come after by naming the films Allegiant parts 1 and 2. But now, new posters from MTV News reveal that they're getting their very own names:

The third film in the series will now be called Allegiant, while the fourth will be called Ascendant. The latter is definitely more climactic, and more fitting for an epic conclusion, than a word that means loyalty, so that's an improvement right there. The changes could end there for all we know, but the taglines suggest that we're going to see major departures from the novel series. The tagline for Allegiant, "Break the boundaries of your world," probably just means more of the virtual reality nonsense that we saw in Insurgent, but the tagline for Ascendant, "The ending is never what you expect," is a fairly explicit warning to fans of the books that the ending will be very different.

Veronica Roth acknowledges that there could be major changes on her blog:

Opening quote
What does this mean? Well, basically, it means there are going to be some changes, but it's really too early to know exactly what those changes will be or the extent of them. I know changes always make fans of the books– and the author!– nervous, but hopefully the characters we know (and love. Or sometimes love to hate?) will still be intact, which is really the important thing. I am eager to see how these movies turn out, along with you guys.
Closing quote

This makes sense, as Insurgent has already changed the mythology of the books to a large extent. The entire plot of the movie hinged on a special box that only Tris could open as a result of her 100% divergence, and none of these plot points appear in the novel. And it seems that the filmmakers will be building on the new mythology, especially since the logo for Ascendant is a double helix. It would seem that Allegiant and Ascendant will expand on the idea that Tris's genetic makeup makes her the special key to everything,  which, by the way, makes no goddamn sense, but from what I've heard of the novels, it's at least more exciting than no plot at all.

The Divergent Series: Allegiant will hit theaters on March 18, 2016, followed by The Divergent Series: Ascendant on March 24, 2017.
