Olivia Cooke to Play the Female Lead in Ready Player One
Olivia Cooke, best known for her breakout role in Me and Earl and the Dying Girl, is set to play the female lead in the adaptation of Ernest Cline's virtual reality gaming novel Ready Player One.

Ready Player One follows a boy named Wade Watts in the year 2044, in an alternate future in which most people are plugged into a utopian virtual reality world called OASIS. But lest you think this is a Matrix ripoff, everyone knows that they're plugged into OASIS, and spend their lives trying to find an Easter egg in the game that will allow them to control OASIS, and therefore rule the world. And since the creator of the game had a love for the 80's, access to the keys to the egg are dependent on the player's knowledge of 80's popular culture.

Cooke will be playing Sam, a Canadian blogger who is one of Wade's primary competitors in the search for the egg, known by her cyber name, Art3mis. She was recently reported to be on a shortlist for the part that included Elle Fanning and Lola Kirke, and is also on the shortlist for Star Wars Episode VIII, along with Tatiana Maslany and Gina Rodriguez.

Ready Player One will be directed and produced by none other than Steven Spielberg, from a screenplay adapted by Cline himself with rewrites from X-Men: The Last Stand and Avengers writer Zak Penn. There is no word yet on who will play Wade, but The Kings of Summer and Jurassic World's Nick Robinson is rumored to be a "favorite" of Spielberg's for the role.

Ready Player One opens in theaters on December 15, 2017.
