Simon Kinberg Says He Is 'Focused on a Sequel' to Fantastic Four, Probably with the Same Cast
When Fantastic Four opened to a dismal box office return and even more dismal reviews, most assumed that a sequel would be off the table. Fox maintained that they were keeping the rights to the character, but the plan seemed to be some sort of crossover with more successful properties, such as X-Men. The sequel is still technically scheduled for a 2017 release, but we all thought it was just a matter of time before Fox officially canceled it. But according to Simon Kinberg, a sequel is definitely still a possibility, and he's already working on it to some extent.

Opening quote
"I'm really focused on the next one," he told MTV News.

Kinberg stated that he was "disappointed" the first film wasn't well-received, especially by the fans, but that hope is not lost for the franchise:

Opening quote
"I was obviously disappointed. I was most disappointed that fans didn't like it. I care more about them than I do anyone else. But I haven't done a full deep dive on it. Do I think it was unfairly treated? I don't know."

Not only is Fox planning to make another film, the studio is trying to make a direct sequel with the same cast:

Opening quote
"I do believe there is a great 'Fantastic Four' movie that we've made with that cast... We're figuring out what that movie would be. I'd like that to happen."

They should probably just hand over the rights to Marvel already, but if another Fantastic Four movie has to happen at Fox, they should definitely hire the same cast, as they were widely acknowledged as the best part of the truly terrible film. Kate Mara, for her part, was less optimistic about the prospect of a sequel than Kinberg, but was at least willing to return:
Opening quote
"[It's] unlikely that [a sequel] will happen, but I would love to [do one]. I would love to play Sue Storm in a movie that everybody loves. That would be great."

Kinberg also addressed the pervasive rumors of behind-the-scenes kerfuffles, which included accusations of studio meddling and allegations that Josh Trank and Miles Teller nearly came to blows on set:

Opening quote
"I've been on plenty of happy movies that don't turn out to be very good movies, I've been on a lot of unhappy, difficult sets that turn out to be great movies," he said. "There was a lot of attention on the process of making that movie. It's hard, when you're making a movie, movies are hard to make. It's just the reality."

In happier news, Kinberg also revealed that he has seen a rough cut of Deadpool, and it's just as wonderful as we all expect from the trailer:

Opening quote
"I have seen a rough cut of Deadpool and it's fantastic," Kinberg told Collider. It's a really good movie. It delivers on the promise of the trailer… We really committed and leaned into it being R-rated. It's just darker and edgier and weirder in the best way-like Deadpool should be-than any other movie in the genre."
Closing quote

He also claimed that the studio is already talking about a sequel, because of course they are:

Opening quote
"We certainly are talking about the sequel-we were talking about the sequel while we were making the movie just because when you make a film like this that's from a serialized source material, you hope that it's the first of many… But yeah [Fox is] feeling good about it, we're all feeling really proud of it, so hopefully before it comes out we will be well into the process of figuring out a sequel."

The Fantastic Four sequel is slated to come out on June 9, 2017 (for now), while Deadpool hits theaters on February 4, 2016.
