Woody Harrelson Tapped to Play Villain in 'War of the Planet of the Apes'
War of the Planet of the Apes may have a stupid, clunky name, but it still seems to be shaping up to be a decent movie, especially now that it has tapped celebrated character actor Woody Harrelson to play the film's main villain.

Harrelson has been establishing himself for many years, but recently experienced a rise in fame after an acclaimed turn in the first season of True Detective. He became a part of the geek community with memorable roles in works like Zombieland and The Hunger Games franchise (although neither of those characters were villains), and will now add more sci-fi fare to his repertoire.

According to THR, Harrelson will play a character called "The Colonel" in War of the Planet of the Apes, although no other details about his role have been released.

War of the Planet of the Apes is the third installment of the rebooted (and wordy) Planet of the Apes series, following 2012's Rise of the Planet of the Apes and last year's Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. The plot is unknown, as is the returning status of the other human characters, such as Jason Clarke's Malcolm or Keri Russell's Ellie. But we do know that the sequel will continue Caesar's story, so we can safely assume that MVP Andy Serkis will return for another groundbreaking motion capture performance.

Dawn's Matt Reeves will return to direct, along with returning screenwriter Matt Bomback. War of the Planet of the Apes is scheduled to be released on July 14, 2017.
