Last we heard, all systems went with the Pacific Rim sequel, with director Guillermo del Toro confirming in July that the working title was "Maelstrom" and that the film would start shooting in November. But now, it looks like the sequel may not happen for a long time- if ever. According to a tell-all by THR on the Universal-Legendary falling out, production has been "halted indefinitely," and there's a possibility that the movie won't come out at all.

The sequel had an uphill battle to begin with, as Pacific Rim was a surprise critical hit, but performed poorly in domestic markets. It performed much better internationally, but not quite enough to guarantee a sequel, and now it looks like Legendary may be balking at the high price tag:

Opening quote
Legendary wanted to produce a sequel to del Toro's Pacific Rim, which was made under the Warners deal and turned into one of those films that grosses a lot ($411 million worldwide) while being so costly that a follow-up isn't a sure thing. Sources say Legendary liked that the original performed exceptionally well in China, where the company is heavily invested, but for now the project - which had been ramping up to make a release date in August 2017 - has been halted indefinitely and will be pushed back (if it gets made at all).
Closing quote

A Pacific Rim sequel would definitely be expensive, as the budget for the first film was rumored to be $190 million, but it still doesn't seem like a huge financial risk. The movie has achieved a cult following since it came out, and sequels tend to do well anyway. We hope that the sequel gets back on track; with all the complaints that movies are all sequels nowadays, it would be a shame if they canceled one that actually had a chance at being good. But at least if it is canceled, we'll still have that animated series (right??).
