Drew Goddard Says the Sinister Six Movie Could Fit Into the MCU
Earlier this year, Spider-Man fans were overjoyed when the character moved back home to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But with that move, all of the planned Spider-Man films at Sony seemed to be cancelled, including the Amazing Spider-Man series and the supervillain mash-up Sinister Six. The Amazing Spider-Man series won't be missed by many, but fans were more disappointed about Sinister Six, and Drew Goddard, who was originally slated to direct, claims that the film could still happen, if Marvel executives want it.

Goddard told io9 that the planned plot of the Sinister Six film would fit in just fine with Marvel's vision for Spider-Man:

Opening quote
"My vision of that movie was a summer annual. So you didn't have to worry about continuity. It was just, 'We take Peter, put him on an adventure, we put him back in his life.' I intentionally wanted a movie that didn't have to worry about mythology and continuity. It was important to me to make a movie that could stand on its own. So the good news is, you know, [laughs], it slots in very well to any plan anybody ever wants. We just need to let a couple years go by, I think."

He clarified that as a fan, he's happy that the rights reverted back to Marvel, even if the fate of Sinister Six is now up in the air:

Opening quote
"The tricky part about all this is I love this plan," he said. "I love that you get to see Spider-Man in Marvel movies. I think that's a great thing. I'm on board with that decision because as a fan that's what I want. So who knows what the future holds? This is Hollywood, man, you've gotta play the long game."

It makes sense that Sinister Six could still be in the words, especially considering all the hype surrounding Suicide Squad. If Suicide Squad is as successful as it is projected to be, then Marvel will likely want to have some kind of answer to it, and Sinister Six would be a prime opportunity. It will likely just depend on Marvel's plans for the character; even though Sinister Six is a story about Spider-Man villains, Goddard claims that Spider-Man was still instrumental to the film:

Opening quote
"It was a Spider-Man movie," said Goddard. "It was the giant, epic Spider-Man movie of my dreams."
