The Dark Knight Returns, which came out in 1986, follows a grizzled, jaded 55-year-old Batman as he comes out of retirement to fight crime and comes into conflict with Superman. It has become a classic in DC lore as a result of its dark tone and sharp storytelling, and is widely believed to be the inspiration for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, at least in part.
