Neil deGrasse Tyson Tweets About The Martian
Neil deGrasse Tyson might just be the most popular and beloved astrophysicist in the world at the moment, and a big part of that is his ability to relate scientific facts to the public in ways that are entertaining, fun, and related to their everyday lives. In fact, the catchphrase for his radio show and late night talk show is "Star Talk: Where Science and Pop Culture Collide." So it makes perfect sense that after the premiere of the new hit movie The Martian, NDT would weigh in. And he sure had a lot to say!

From the start, The Martian has been presented as one of the most scientifically accurate sci-fi films ever made, and it looks like Tyson would definitely agree with that. In fact, some of his biggest issues with the realism of the film are that "all who make important decisions are scientifically literate" and that "the USA & China cooperate with one another in space." It's definitely sad that the most unrealistic aspects of a sci-fi film are that they envision decision makers as well informed and nations as entities actually capable of working together for the greater good.

Nevertheless, it seems that all geeks agree that The Martian was a fantastic film and a great tool to get the public eye back on the space program and science in general. With the recent discovery of liquid water on Mars and a planned mission to send astronauts into orbit around the red planet in 2033, it's never been more imperative for the world to see the possibilities of further exploration on the earth's closest planetary neighbor. Mankind is on the verge of doing a lot of really big things in space, and The Martian very well may help gain the support that is needed to do them!
