NASA's Side-By-Side Comparison of The Martian and the Real Mission to Mars
After a huge opening weekend, The Martian is officially a success. This is not only good news for sci-fi fans, but for science enthusiasts and NASA themselves, as the space organization is hoping to use the film to drive public interest in (and therefore funding for) their real-life mission to Mars. And since NASA consulted on the science of The Martian, the fictional Ares mission closely mirrors a near-future NASA Mars mission in many ways, as NASA illustrated in their new side-by-side comparison:

If we had one complaint about the otherwise excellent film (other than that stupid stapler scene), it's that it occasionally went over-the-top in its advertisements for NASA. But that small annoyance is a small price to pay if The Martian actually increases public support for a mission to Mars (which it seems like it might), as that will be key for getting a manned mission to the Red Planet.
