One Out of Four Far-Right UK Voters Believe in a Government Alien Conspiracy

UK conservatives really, really want to believe. According to a new survey from YouGov, a full 24% of the Ukip party (the most rightist party in Britain, somewhat comparable to the American Tea Party) believe that aliens have already contacted Earth, but the government is covering it up, X-Files-style.

According to the survey, 24% of Ukip voters, 18% of Labour voters, and 14% of Conservative voters agree that the government is perpetrating an elaborate alien conspiracy. Liberal Democrats, the most leftist party in Britain, were the most skeptical of this notion by far, with only 8% agreeing with the hypothesis.

To play the Scully, there's really no evidence for a government cover-up of alien contact as far as we know. But to be fair, the Ukip party is also the most amenable to the idea that there is alien life in general, which is concurrent with the opinion of most astronomers, and is supported by plenty of scientific evidence. But Liberal Democrats were almost equally open to the idea, and were the staunchest supporters for sending a digital message for intelligent extraterrestrials via the Breakthrough Listen project. 59% of Liberal Democrats believed that we should send the message, while all three of the other parties hovered around 45%.
