Watch: The "World's Only True Jetpack" Flies Around New York City
Van Nuys-based company Jetpack Aviation might have just fulfilled every sci-fi fan's childhood dreams and created a real-life jetpack. In this incredible video, they conduct a beautiful test flight around (where else?) New York City:

There are other products that perform similar functions, but according to the creators, this jetpack is unique because it actually uses a jet engine, and because it has the potential for mass consumption. The founders of Jetpack Aviation call themselves "jetpack purists," because they want to build a jetpack that is light enough for the average consumer to carry around and small enough to fit into the back of the car. This new prototype fulfills both of those criteria, and according to the company, can travel up to 10,000 feet in the air, fly at up to 100 miles per hour.

Unfortunately, it can only run for approximately 10 minutes at a time (which is terrifying, if you think about it, what if you get stuck up there somehow?). But still, it does seem to be a bonafide jetpack, and could promise a future in which we all zip around the sky to our hearts' desire. A lot of work still needs to be done before mass consumption is even on the table, but the company is currently working on an emergency parachute system (that would be helpful), a virtual reality simulator to train potential pilots more quickly, and a potential hands-off version of the technology.
