Hasbro Releases Eerily Lifelike Robotic Kitties for Seniors
With their new toy line for seniors, Hasbro proves itself determined to traverse the uncanny valley with these weird, almost realistic animatronic cats that purr, meow, and supposedly feel just like real cats:

The robotic cats are equipped with motion, light, and touch sensors that allow it to respond to the owner's voice and physical affection. They also have new built-in vibration technology that allows their purring to both sound and feel realistic. They'll nuzzle their heads in their hands if you pet their heads and become increasingly relaxed as you pet them, eventually rolling over for a belly rub and then closing its eyes and snoozing. The only real giveaway is its somewhat expressionless eyes, not to mention that most real cats will attack you if you rub their bellies for too long, and all of them will tell you to f*ck off every once in a while.

The toys seem a little depressing at first, as they're acknowledging that seniors are lonely and need companionship. But on the other hand, we've all had Tomagotchis and Neopets and any number of other virtual pets growing up, so it's sort of a timeless inclination.
