Because Science: How TR-8R's Baton Repels a Lightsaber
The Stormtrooper affectionately known as TR-8R (whose real name is FN-2199, or "Nines") has become an unexpected breakout character from The Force Awakens, not least as a result of the awesomeness of that lightsaber-repelling Z6 Riot Control Baton. But how does this badass weapon work? Nerdist's Kyle Hill took on this question in his latest video, and the answer is- because science.

In the above video, Hill theorizes that a lightsaber is essentially a fusion device that uses magnetic fields to constrain arcs and blades of plasma. As a result, the baton would be able to repel a lightsaber using a relatively simple mechanism: an electric charge. According to the laws of physics, magnetic and electric fields repel each other if they are running in opposite directions. So the baton could use the "force" (sorry) of electromagnetism if it had an electric current that ran in the opposite direction to the magnetic field surrounding the plasma.

A little science knowledge goes a long way when dealing with "TRAITORS"!
