This Life-Size, Voice-Controlled BB-8 Droid Follows You Around Like a Dog
The story behind BB-8's development for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is now well known, and Sphero's mini app-controlled astromechs were a huge hit over the holiday season. But we fans are a demanding bunch, and it wasn't long before we started to demand a bigger, more realistic BB-8 with which to play with.

Now, our outrageous demands appear to have been answered, courtesy of toy manufacturers, SpinMaster. Spin Master's upcoming BB-8 toy will measure at approximately 19 inches tall with it's antenna, dwarfing Sphero's miniature app-controlled alternative. But it's size is only just part of the attraction. Spin Master's BB-8 is, in so many ways, the most interactive version of the astromech ever. While it's still controlled by a remote, this BB-8 has voice recognition technology that allows it to respond to your voice, even turning its head when you call its name.

But voice recognition isn't much good if BB-8 can't act on it, which is why Spin Master have given their BB-8 a crude homing device, allowing the droid to seek you out when you call its name. Adding to this tracking ability, this BB-8 will also have a 'Follow Me' mode, which sees it obediently roll along your side like a spherical metal dog.

Spin Master's BB-8 is being unveiled at next week's New York Toy Fair, but it likely won't make it to market until at least fall 2016. The lengthy wait is probably a good thing as it will allow you the necessary time to save up for Spin Master's $180 price tag. But before you baulk at the cost, just remember, it's actually only $30 more than Sphero's mini version, and it comes packed with a lot more features.
