New AI Robotic Arm Plays Settlers of Catan

If you've ever found yourself desperately wanting to play Settlers, but can't find any friends who can spare five or six hours, you can now play with your friendly neighborhood robotic arm. German robotics company Kuka has teamed up with students at the Regensburg University of Applied Sciences to make a robot that can play our favorite nerdy strategy game.

The robotic arm is controlled by an AI, which the students created by making an online game platform that takes data from human players, and then using it to teach the robot through Machine Learning. It's not super advanced in its strategy yet, but it can precisely place road pieces and build settlements, not to mention move that robber around.

Opening quote
"Working with the robot you see pieces moving and you see the robot doing some interesting things, so the students really like the robot," course instructor Dr. Weiss said in a statement. "They like it because they can put their ideas in very practical things."
Closing quote

And what's more practical than playing Settlers of Catan for hours/days/weeks on end?
