Elon Musk Says SpaceX Could Put Humans on Mars in 2024
SpaceX has already announced plans to send their Dragon rocket to Mars in 2018, but in typical Elon Musk fashion, he's getting a whole lot more ambitious than that. According to the SpaceX and Tesla founder, his space agency could get humans to Mars in as little as nine years.

Opening quote
"If things go according to plan, we should be able to-we should be able to-launch people in 2024, with arrival in 2025," he said while speaking at the Code Conference yesterday. "That's the game plan."

The Dragon V2 capsule, which is the craft that is projected to make an unmanned mission to Mars in a couple of years, could technically take humans to Mars as well. However, Musk clarified, the capsule has the interior volume of a large SUV, and the trip to Mars takes six months, so it's "probably not ideal" for humans. And there's another, not-so-small catch:

Opening quote
"It also doesn't have the capability of getting back to Earth," he said. "We put that in the fine print!"

But the potential Mars settlers won't have to rely solely on growing their own potatoes Mark Watney-style, as Musk plans to establish "cargo flights to Mars that people can count on" to re-supply the burgeoning colony. (Although worst-case scenario, they could always "science the shit out of it" themselves.)

And speaking of The Martian, Musk said that he enjoyed the movie, and that "it was like 80% scientifically correct."
