Someone Calculated How Much it Would Cost to Make a Fully-Functioning Darth Vader Suit
It was one of the most feared weapons in the Empire's armory, causing devastation and destruction just about everywhere it went. No, we're not talking about the Death Star (1 or 2), we're talking about Darth Vader's suit and the man that was contained within it. After getting sliced, diced, and lightly sautéed by Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker's life was saved by Emperor Palpatine's robotic medical crew and their ingenious creation of a very functional, but very scary life support suit.

In Star Wars canon, Vader's suit is at the cutting edge of technology, helping to not just keep the Dark Lord alive, but also to turn him into a lethal weapon. While we know that the Empire wasn't exactly short of a penny or two, we've often wondered exactly how many Galactic Credits were poured into this one man. Thankfully, someone has figured out how much a fully-functioning Vader suit would cost in the real world, and the answer is actually kind of surprising.

Created by the retailer ShadeStation, the infographic uses data from a study by the Economics blog, Centives to see how much it would take to keep one of the most powerful Jedi/Sith alive in a suit that's as bad-ass as it is menacing. The answer? A mere $18.3 million.

As you can see, the bulk of the suit cost comes in creating the air-tight base layer. $12million might seem like a lot, but when you consider it allows Vader to survive in just about any environment, even the vacuum of space, it's quite a good investment. I'd say one thing that is missing from all of this is the discount you'd get when ordering the job as the evil Emperor of the entire Galaxy, but that really would be nitpicking. Too bad it all came back to bite old Sheev in his wrinkly Sith butt.
