The First Feature-Length VR Movie Will Be a Jesus Christ Biopic
Filmmaking is about to take a giant step into a whole new genre: virtual reality religious biopics. The Venice International Film Festival will screen a 40-minute preview of Jesus VR - The Story of Christ, the first-ever feature-length movie made entirely for virtual reality.

Jesus VR will take place 2,000 years ago, and will follow Jesus of Nazareth through his entire life, as told by the Bible. It promises a "you-are-there experience" for such events as Jesus' baptism, the Sermon on the Mount, the Last Supper, the crucifixion, and the resurrection. It will be shot in Matera, Italy, which was also a shooting location for Passion of the Christ.

The entire film will be shot in virtual reality 4K 360°, and will be released on all major VR platforms, such as Google Cardboard, Samsung Gear, Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR, and the HTC VIVE. And even if religious films aren't your cup of tea, this is a huge step for virtual reality film and television in general, as the Venice preview will serve as a sort of proof-of-concept for other proposed VR projects.

Opening quote
"The presentation is particularly important, because this year the updated film market, now called Venice Production Bridge, is also presenting six VR projects among the 40 proposed audiovisual products in search of financing, alongside movies, documentaries, TV series and web series," said festival director Alberto Barbera. "It is a sign of the attention the Venice Film Festival pays to the sweeping changes which are helping redefine the horizons of the production of images in motion."
Closing quote

Jesus VR - The Story of Christ will preview at VIFF, which starts on August 31. The full film will come out on VR platforms—when else?—on Christmas Day.
