Uncanny Robots, Star-Lord's Jetpack, and the New 'Alien' VR Experience: The Best Science Videos of the Week

Every week, we bring you the coolest science videos we can find, ranging from virtual reality to robotics to astrophysics. If you missed last week, check it out here!

Enter the Acura Sphere of Doom!

When we saw this at Silicon Valley Comic-Con, we thought it was supposed to be some kind of flight simulator. It's actually part of Acura's "Mood Roads" VR program, which "offers attendees a full-sensory virtual driving experience, using brainwave technology to tap into 30 of the driver's emotional, cognitive and physical inputs to create a unique environment with landscape, color and music changing in real time to reflect the driver's moods."

We're still gonna call it the Sphere of Doom.

Alien Fountains on Europa

NASA's exploration of the solar system continues to yield amazingly cool discoveries, like these giant geysers of vapor coming from one of the chief candidates for extraterrestrial life, Europa.

Demo Playthrough of Alien: Covenant In Utero

We did a write-up about this VR experience yesterday, before footage had come out for it. It's just as creepy and disturbing as we imagined. Instead of running from xenomorphs down darkened corridors, you play as a xenomorph—specifically, the newly introduced neomorph—as it gestates inside someone and ruptures their chest, crawling out of them and into what appears to be an operating room.

The Hacksmith Makes Star-Lord's Jetpack

Considering what the Hacksmith has come up with in the past, we were disappointed to find out that this was not a fully functional jetpack able to life a full-grown man off the ground and into foreign airspace. Instead, it's an uber-powerful set of air propellers that have enough juice to rocket Hobson down a narrow street on a skateboard. And then take a huge, painful spill (which is fun to watch).

Jimmy Fallon Meets Creepy Robots, Tells Them Jokes

Fallon can be a bit obnoxious at times, what with his smarmy, perpetually smirking face, but we have to admit that the selection of robots he brings to his show is impressive (and a little creepy). The highlight is definitely Sofia, who is a walking argument for why the Uncanny Valley is a real thing robot designers need to pay attention to.
