Returning To Earth In A Soyuz Space Capsule

Much is said about the experience of travelling to space and the focus almost always remains on that dramatic departure from the ground also known as lift-off. But what is it like to make the return journey? A new video posted by the European Space Agency (ESA) sheds some light on how the brave inhabitants of the International Space Station say goodbye to their zero-g home and make their way back to Earth in a Soyuz capsule.

Featuring accounts from ISS astronauts, this video is actually derived from a 2009 class delivered to ESA astronauts in basic training and it provides a fascinating look at the precision required to deliver a crew to its predetermined landing zone.

The theory is fascinating, but listening to astronauts give a blow-by-blow account of what reentry feels like while watching actual footage from a soyuz capsule is captivating stuff. Captivating as it is, watching this is enough to convince me that I don't have the grapes for space travel...
