Once in a Spooky Moon: First Friday the 13th Full Moon in 13 Years

For the superstitious and triskaidekaphobic among us, today is a very spooky day. This Friday the 13th happens to fall on a full moon— which is a surprisingly rare occurrence.

The moon officially became full at 12:11 am EDT this morning, and will remain so throughout the day. The last time this happened on a Friday the 13th was a little over 13 years ago in October 2000. The next won't take place again until August 2049, so catch it while you can!

This full moon, considered a "Honey Moon" as a result of the thick layers of atmosphere that are distorting its light, will, according to Slooh community telescope representatives, " be the most amber or honey colored full moon of 2014, especially when it rises at sunset Thursday evening."
